Thank you to Linda Ervine

Sheena Wilkinson, author of Star by Star, is writing one postcard each month to a woman who influenced her, inspired her, helped her – and the postcard is her thank you. They will appear on our blog on the 14th of every month, right up to the end of the year! To follow them all, check in on our blog and on Twitter under #StarByStarThankYous

As we approach St Patrick’s Day, my Star By Star thank you is, for the first time, to a living person. Growing up in Belfast, my culturally-mixed background often made me feel alienated and excluded by prevailing ideologies. If you’re this, you can’t be that. Had there been more women like the wonderful Linda Ervine around, I’d have been much more confident.

Linda, a Protestant who fell in love with the Irish language, champions that  language, reminding us that it’s not about politics or ideology; it’s part of our shared heritage and shouldn’t be a political football. It’s all around us, in our townland names, in the names of our towns and villages.

She is brave, open and not afraid to annoy people. She’s the kind of women whose courage and forthrightness make life better for all of us, in whatever language we choose to express ourselves.

Write to us on social media or through our Contact Form to request your own postcard, and start thinking about what amazing woman you want to thank.
